Hi everyone, My work are hosting a small LAN party and I have been tasked to find a FPS game to play there. There are a few complications though, because we will all have pretty low specs on our machines (Core 2 Duo MacBooks, with either GeForce 9400M or 320M) If you want to know why we don't just use proper gaming computers or high end macs, we have access to many of these C2D MacBooks. I have heard games like Unreal Tournament and Quake are good, but I don't know much about relatively old games.
Anyone know some good games which are as close to free as possible?
Me and some friends are having a LAN party in a week or so and today I thought it would be a good idea to test out my switch which I got from my work place (the switch is pretty old) so I took my g5 and switch to my friend house to see if we could get a couple of games to play together over LAN. We were unable to get the computers to connect to each other over LAN via the switch, but when we connected the computers directly to each other via Ethernet we were able to start a game and play together.
So my question is: do I need to configure the switch, or computers to connect to each other as a LAN? There are going to be two Macs and ten PCs at te LAN party. Hi, my home network is as below this reply, mac's/pc's and various other network devices, a NAS, printers and media and satellite systems. If you are just using a switch then you need to manually set the IP addresses, make sure all are on the same subnet (255.255.255.0) and give every pc and mac a different IP (192.168.1.1 for game server and increase by 1 for each further pc/mac so 192.168.1.2 etc). With this setup all the other pcs and macs need is the IP address of the game server (192.168.1.1) and play away.
The easiest thing is to use a switch in conjunction with a router, so the router handles the DHCP and internal IP allocation which means you can set the pcs and macs to 'automatic' in the ethernet settings in Networks. Then host your game on any pc/mac and the others will see it when they search for a LAN or local game server, so all they have to do is click join. You don't need to set all the individual pcs and macs to the same Workgroup as that is only needed if you want to access shared folders, printers etc on a pc. I hope this helps, let us know how you get on.
